Over the years our vision of a beautiful woman has changed. Over 100 years ago, the perfect woman was curvy and in the 1950’s we had Marilyn Monroe. Over the past decade or so our idea of a perfect model is basically celebrating anorexia. The models are tiny and even at a weight of 100 pounds, they still are air-brushed to make them look perfect….but in whose eyes?
Recently, Israel decided to take a stand and recognize a dangerous trend; not allowing emaciated models work in the country. Vogue isn’t going to feature those models that are unhealthy either. How refreshing is that?
What message have we been communicating to our daughters and to ourselves? To be attractive you have to be skinny? As soon as you turn on the TV you see commercials with skinny models. It seems as if they are implying that to be pretty and popular, you have to be thin. I read an article written by a 13 year old girl that said, ” We live in a thin obsessed world where skinny models are idolized and 60% of high-school girls want to lose weight”. How sad is that?
I was excited to see the new slogan “Healthy is the new Skinny”….Last month HNS posted a photo to provide some perspective on the body types that are typically used in advertising. The photo showed the Victoria’s Secret models and the Dove campaign models side by side.
There were thousands of comments made about this campaign and they ranged from one end of the spectrum to the other. Both men and women responded and some of the comments were hurtful. I’ll let you be the judge of the campaign. Real women are beautiful and sexy and intelligent and confident and isn’t that the message we should be sharing?
