This past year has been the year of the unknown. What was I going to do? Where was I going to do it? How would I get this idea off the ground? Why would anyone listen? What did I want to be when I grew up? Have you been there? Are you there now? I thought so because I hear this everyday from friends, acquaintances and new business connections.
Let’s just put it out there. Life is hard. Whether you have financial resources or not, whether you have an amazing concept or not and whether you fly solo or not…it’s just hard. So let’s start at the beginning. When I decided to go into Phase 3 or 4 or maybe it’s even 5, I got connected to a business coach. Can’t afford one you say? You can’t afford not to. She asked me one question “If money and age were not an issue, and you knew you couldn’t fail, what would you be doing? Have you asked yourself that question? Do you have a definite idea of what you would be doing? Can you describe it to someone else so it makes sense? If you don’t you need to do that because everything else will start to fall into place. You need to have something to focus on so that when you are wavering and something sounds interesting over there, you can focus and bring it back home.
Let me give you an example. Recently I was offered to do training for an amazing company. They have the name, the clout and the resources to make things happen. How exciting it would be for me to be connected with them. Who knows where this can lead? How many people’s lives would I be touching? I was excited….and overwhelmed and stressed to the max. Why?? It had nothing to do with Selling In A Skirt….I mean nothing. But it was certainly tempting. I thought about it and met with the company on numerous occasions and I was IN. I decided to shut down for a few days and really decide where my focus should be. I talked to some old friends and some new friends that understood my dilemma but were also not afraid to give their opinions.
After some soul-searching about who I am and what I want to do, I decided to decline the offer and truth be told, after I did, I was so relieved. I knew I had made the right choice. Other opportunities would be presented to me that would be right…and they have been.
Bottom line: Be clear about what you want. Don’t get side-tracked. Stand firm about how you want your life to be and remember, it’s ok to say no to business, when it takes your eye off the prize.

Judy, What a good job. You hooked me more than once. Focus can be so elusive and I appreciate being reminded of that. I have a saying on my bulletin board. To focus develop awareness (little eastern thought there) jl
