Why Your Reputation Deserves CEO-Level Attention
Let’s get one thing straight: Your reputation is not what people say about you.
It’s what people believe about you…when you’re not in the room.
And whether your realize it or not, you’re building it every single day.
In a world that constantly tries to put women in boxes…”too much”, “not enough”, “too ambitious”, “not read”…you have a choice. You can let others write the narrative…or you can own the pen.
Being the CEO of your own reputation means getting crystal clear on what you want to be known for…and backing that up with how you show up, communicate and lead. It’s not about polishing a brand. It’s about embodying your values. Consistently.
Intentional Leadership Starts with Self-Perception
Here’s the shift: Reputation isn’t something you wait to earn. It’s something you actively shape.
Start by asking:
- What do I want people to remember after working with me?
- Where might there be a gap between how I show up and how I want to be perceived?
- What actions can I take to align more fully with the impact I want to make?
I’ve worked with executive women and physician leaders who were brilliant…but invisible. Talented…but underestimated. Why? Because they were doing the work, not directing the spotlight. They though being excellent was enough. It wasn’t.
Let me take that one step further. My very first coach was an incredible woman. She knew how to get the best out of you and helped me design and launch my company. She told me that it wasn’t always like that. In fact, she had to reinvent herself. Not what she did. Not who she worked for. Her mindset. When she decided she was the CEO of her company…not just calling herself one…becoming one, everything changed. She knew what was expected of her with the companies and individuals that hired her. She knew the impact she wanted to make, and she never compromised on her values. She was and is a true force of nature.
Owning your reputation means claiming the space you’ve earned. Speaking the truth of your value. And understanding that how you show up matters just as much as what you do.
What It Means to Embody Your Values, Not Just State Them
You don’t need to be loud. You just need to be clear.
Because when you’re intentional about your reputation, you create influence without having to chase it.
And remember…if your reputation is your most valuable asset, don’t leave it in someone else’s hands.
You are the CEO.
Lead accordingly.
