What drew you to healthcare originally?
For as long as I can remember I’ve been interested in teeth. I didn’t play house as a child, I played dentist. Growing up I knew a woman who was a Dental Hygienist and she worked 3 days a week and had a family. I liked that flexibility as I also wanted to eventually have a family.
When you first entered healthcare, what surprised you most…something you expected to be harder or easier or something you simply didn’t anticipate?
The relationships that you build with what begin as perfect strangers. People can get very vulnerable in the dental chair sometimes. It can be heavy or light-hearted but it’s an honor to carry those experiences with people. When you work at an office for a long period of time you get to see the growth and changes in people’s lives. It’s a unique experience.

What are five things guiding you right now-the priorities, boundaries, values or practices you actively protect in this season of your career so you can continue doing meaningful work?
Faith: My faith drives and informs everything I do, my relationships, my interests.
Family: Of course, strengthening and protecting my relationships with my immediate family of my husband, my son and a child on the way. But also my extended family, I do my best to spend as much time with them as possible. Life is short and I certainly want to take advantage of whatever time we are blessed with.
Relationships outside of family: I want to build strong, deep friendships with those few core people that are my “tribe.” Fellow moms I’ve connected with, older women whose influence I value, younger women who I can be a mentor to in one or another. I think we often forget or don’t realize the influence we can have on those around us, for good or bad. No matter where we are in life, what our current experience is someone is always watching and gaining encouragement or discouragement from how we manage those experiences.
Health: Physical health is important to me. I personally have really enjoyed weight training over the last several years. I want to be active and able to keep up with my children as they grow up and I want to be around – and healthy – when they are older and having their own families. I also try to get as much time outdoors as I can. Sunshine is wonderful healer.

What is one piece of advice you would offer to women working in healthcare, or those considering a career in healthcare?
Make yourself irreplaceable. Continue to learn and grow in your field of study. Even if you have no plans of advancement there are always opportunities to learn a new skill, grow deeper in the skills you already have, or even to mentor someone in your same position or working toward it. Also, be reliable. Your coworkers, your bosses, your employees will all quickly notice whether or not they can count on you.
