5 Myths About Coaching That Keep Women Stuck (And What’s Actually True)

A woman in a business suit stands at a desk in a modern office, talking on the phone and looking surprised while holding a coaching document.

The Real Cost of Waiting to Invest in Your Leadership Growth

If you’ve ever thought, “I should be able to figure this out myself” of “Coaching is for people who are struggling”…you’re not alone.

I’ve coached hundreds of brilliant women, and I see the same thing over and over: they don’t hire a coach because they aren’t capable…they hire a coach because they are.

Yet these five myths hold so many back:

1️⃣Myth: Coaching is only for people who are struggling.

☑️Truth: Elite performers, from CEOs to Olympic athletes, always have coaches. It’s not about fixing; it’s about optimizing.

2️⃣Myth: I should be able to figure this out on my own.

☑️Truth: You can, but it will take longer and cost you more energy. Coaching accelerates clarity and shortcuts trial and error. And…why should you do it on your own?

3️⃣Myth: Coaching is too “soft” for real leadership growth.

☑️Truth: The best coaching blends mindset and strategy. Confidence without action is empty. And action without clarity burns you out.

4️⃣Myth: Coaching is indulgent.

☑️Truth: Coaching is an investment that pays dividends…in your leadership, your career trajectory, your ability to lead sustainably…AND your life. It’s impossible to grow in one without the other. Investing in yourself is the best investment you can make.

5️⃣Myth: I’ll do it when things slow down.

☑️Truth: If you’re waiting for life to be “less busy,” you’ll be waiting forever. The best time to create change is while you’re in motion.

The bottom line is that coaching isn’t about making you someone else. It’s about helping you become more of who you already are…on purpose.

The Truth High-Achieving Women Need to Hear About Support

If you’ve ever wondered what coaching could look like for you, keep an eye out: later this week, I’m sharing a real transformation story from a client who went from burnt out and invisible to leading with clarity, confidence and impact.

Until then, I’d love to know:

Which of these myths have you believed before?

P.S. I believe so strongly in the value of coaching that I always work with two coaches myself-a female coach who deeply understands my lived experience, and a male coach who brings a complementary perspective I need. It keeps me sharp, balanced and growing. If I expect the women I work with to invest in themselves, I hold myself to the same standard.
